A wintry fantasy of the summer solstice

You walk along the streets of Madrid, you see images, colors, hustle and bustle, you hear voices and whispers, while your pencil sketches everything. Later, back in your studio, when you close your eyes, all the silhouettes seem to breathe life, and rotate, and move, and your creative effort builds a picture out of them, extracting the essence of what you have seen and heard.

Yet in the days of the winter solstice, let me introduce these "Urban Nymphs” emerging from Madrid Rio, nostalgia, and anticipation of the summer evenings. The musical companion is the aria "Der Hölle Rache", from Mozart´s opera "The Magic Flute", with a superb Diana Damrau as the Queen of the Night.

Pilgrims in human endeavour (V): Grigory Perelman

Poincaré´s conjecture is one of the peaks achieved by mankind in their attempt to understanding the Universe, following a path that starts with the myths, and runs across Philosophy, Physics, and Mathematics. Its proof has been a chain of efforts, the last link having been forged by the Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman.

I am an artist, not a mathematician, and I shall not deal with either the conjecture or its proof by copying and pasting a few fragments, taken from here and there, about something whose meaning I cannot grasp. Instead, I want to highlight how Perelman has rejected some awards that would have monetised his work, probably extended over ten years: the International Mathematical Union´s Fields Medal (2006) and the Clay Mathematics Institute´s Millennium Prize(2010), the latter being a million dollars worth.

Several reasons have been suggested for these rejections: some reluctances to recognizing his results, the publication of an article pretending their completion, and the lack of support from his colleagues in these incidents; according to his declarations he is disillusioned with the mathematical community, he is neither interested in fame nor in money, and he does not want to be exhibited like an animal in a zoo.

This not very common attitude has resulted in numerous scornful judgments about our pilgrim, including the daring attribution of some disease. In turn, I believe that pushing the Golden Calf away Perelman has defended his work, his dignity, and his freedom and, in doing so, he has proven not only Poincare’s Conjecture, but also that a clean, disinterested Science is still possible. When evoking him with my drawings, I glimpse a mystic of the 21st century, a flash of the spirit contrasting with the globalized financial Sodom the world has become. With this post I want to demonstrate my respect, my admiration, and my tribute to Grigory Perelman.

The peaceful prelude to Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suite No 1, played by Mischa Maisky, creates the perfect environment for this homage.

mil Guadarramas y mil soles vienen,
cabalgando conmigo, a tus entrañas.

The blue mountains of Castilla on the background

Once again, I have spent my summer on the sober landscapes of the Duero Plateau. My paintbrushes have picked up this sample from such landscapes, which I offer to you together with an evocation of Antonio Machado:

Is it you, Guadarrama, my old friend,
your mountains in white and grey,
those mountains painted on the blue
I used to see in my Madrid evenings?
Trough your deep gorges,
across your sour heights,
Suns a thousand - a thousand Guadarramas coming over
riding with me inside your heart, your core.

(From Machado, Antonio: Campos de Castilla).

The choice for music have been Bach´s Goldberg Variations, by Glenn Gould.

En el crisol mediterráneo

Brisa (130 cm × 97 cm)

In the Mediterranean melting pot

The Mediterranean light is an important part of my chromatic heritage. I have deepened into its blue colours as if going into the crystal clear waters of the coasts lapped by this sea. I wanted to evoke the beach summer days sitting by the seashore, playing games, laughing, smelling the scented breeze, feeling the salt and the sun tanning the skin, exploring infinite white sands, staring at the reddish sunsets igniting the waves on the horizon, and enjoying the savoir-vivre shared by the inhabitants of these shores; from Ithaca to Malaga, from Sicilia to Corfu. A beautiful trip in which, like that of Kavafis, I have experienced colours, relished pigment mixtures, enriched with each brush stroke on my way to Ithaca.

When you set out on your journey to Ithaca,
pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the angry Poseidon - do not fear them:
You will never find such as these on your path,
if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
emotion touches your spirit and your body.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the fierce Poseidon you will never encounter,
if you do not carry them within your soul,
if your soul does not set them up before you.
[...]
Always keep Ithaca in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for many years;
and to anchor at the island when you are old,
rich with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Pilgrims in human endeavour (IV): Benito Pérez Galdós

Benito Pérez Galdós was, and still is, one of the greatest writers Spain has ever produced. His gigantic creation includes seventy-seven novels, twenty-two theatre plays and forty-six volumes of the so-called Episodios Nacionales.

He was a concentrate and mindful observer of places and people, and was endowed with a prodigious memory for both images and phrases. He searched everywhere for raw materials his novels are made of: walking through all streets, travelling in third class train coaches, lodging in humble inns, and talking to witnesses of historical events. Here and there he used to grasp conversations and forms of language, find spots, and learn about human nature. This way he collected data to later on elaborate the sober and precise outlines of his enticing narrations. But most of all, that provided him with omnipresent characters, both fictitious and historical, which seem to take on a life of their own.

After reading his Episodios Nacionales, one gets the impression of having travelled through time to the years he limns; so vivid is his description.

These series of novels are probably the most enormous and outstanding of all of his writings. He portrays the most salient features of Spanish folk of all times; what ran through Spanish veins of those days, runs now, and will ever run. He also cleverly depicts the quirks of our history, abounded with blunders and bad governance, and painfully similar to what we, still today, have to endure.

Making no single concession, he unveils the mind-set of us, Spanish people, both ruling and ruled. He crudely describes the way we are and where this way of being compels us to go. Ignoring this fundamental author of our literature is turning our back on the mirror reflecting the truth of our reality, and of our intrinsic nature.

This time I have chosen this stunning musical piece from his contemporaneous composer: Enrique Granados.

Tres gritos

Tres gritos. 130 cm × 89 cm

Voces, voices.

Clamores, clamours.

Gritos, shouts.

Lamentos, moans.

Quejas, grievance.

Cantos, songs.

De dolor; on pain.

De rabia; on rage.

De angustia; on anxiety.

De indignación; on indignation.

De tristeza; on sadness.

Mankind clumsiness, devastating the planet in an unbridled race towards the abyss, like that of the Marx Brother's train for land deed, hurts. Human blindness, closing the eyes to internal worlds and neglecting the soul, saddens. The high and mighty ones with their arrongace and unjustness, spoiling and abusing the helpless, enrages.

With this picture I'd wish to join the chorus of those claiming for lucidity, pleading for deepness, crying for Justice.

The chorus of non-heard clamors, non-listened voices, non-heeded cries.

Pilgrims in human endeavour (III): Rita Levi-Montalcini

Rita Levi-Montalcini passed away on December the 30th 2012, aged 103. Death found her at work, collaborating with the European Institute of Brain Research, being the president of a Foundation of her name devoted to aiding the young African girls to get access to academic curricula, and publishing books. Thus, her life assessed the truth of a statement she issued during an interview in her 100th birthday:

Our mind never gets old.

However, this is possible only on condition that: we put at work our intellect, our mental abilities, our power to project and to decide, not only when we become old but at any time.

Similarly to Ramón y Cajal - of whom she was actually a follower - she conjoins vital attitude and scientific research. In fact, her main scientific discovery was the so-called nerve-growth factor and proved that the neurons of some specific brain areas can be regenerated, so maybe there is chance that those of other areas are renewable too.

Her discoveries were not accepted at the very beginning, since they contradicted well-established precedent ideas, but finally her postulates prevailed and she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986.

This prize did finally justice to a life of extremely tough work, which started in adverse circumstances: her vocation came up against her father’s opposition. Later on, after graduation, Benito Mussolini's laws which excluded Jews from academic and professional careers detached her from her scientific activity and during Second World War she had to carry out her research in an improvised laboratory set up in her own bedroom.

We see in Professor Levi-Montalcini perseverance, firmness and willpower: the key aspects always found in our adventurers in human endevour.

Today, while writing this entry, I was listening to this peculiar version of Nessun dorma, beautifully interpreted by the eternally great maestro Alfredo (found here).

Érase una plaza madrileña + {Tarjetas postales de Turina}

Madrid and its lively squares.

In any corner of Madrid and (almost) at any time of the year, one can see cheerful chat scenes on improvised seats (whether comfortable or not). The inspiration for this work has its source in one of these scenes I came across in the Maravillas quarter (literary: wonder quarter), which is especially dear to me because of its diverse ambiances, its odd shops and its quaint squares, streets and lanes.

I'd like to wink at Panta Rhei today, one of my favourite art-related bookshops in this neighbourhood which is assisted by extremely nice people. It is one of the best of its kind in town and it is a lovely spot - difficult indeed to pass by without making a new purchase. And talking about institutions in the area, there is one which has not been there for a long long time but has already become a classic: the spices alchemist and magician who from her little corner in Valverde 42 has recovered traditional businesses flavour and shopping chitchat in an unbirthday tea party atmosphere. I am going to get me a cherry-cherry tea to your health right now, dear Yuli.

Walking from Valverde to San Bernardo St. – oh, surprise! – the timeless bookshop Fuentetaja is again open. Let us all printed-paper junkies cheer up with this return after several months longing the spot, watching the neglected-looking shop windows behind bars.

Today's music is a postcard the composer Joaquín Turina "sends" us, interpreted by Antonio Soria.
